A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society
By Brooke Fenwick, Hannah Davies, Freya Gruffydd Jones.
Every March, Social Work Month invites us to pause, reflect, and recognise the extraordinary work of social workers everywhere. This year’s theme – “Co‑Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society” feels especially resonant for the For Baby’s Sake approach. At its heart, our work is about bringing people together, restoring safety, breaking cycles of trauma, and building connected communities where babies and families can thrive.
“Harambee,” a Swahili word meaning “all pull together,” captures a powerful truth: meaningful change is never built alone. It takes collective effort, shared responsibility, and unwavering belief in each person’s capacity for transformation.
Holding Hope: Even When It Feels Heavy
Social workers are often the ones who carry hope in situations where families may feel they have none left. At For Baby’s Sake, we see this every day. Parents come to us amid fear, conflict, and the weight of their own past trauma. Professionals step in not with judgement, but with the belief that:
• people can change,
• relationships are central,
• and new patterns can begin with the next generation.
This holding of hope is radical. It is the first step in uniting community’s, mending fractured relationships, and ensuring babies can grow up in safe, nurturing homes.
A Harambee Approach: Working Together for Whole Family Change
For Baby’s Sake has always been rooted in partnership. No single professional, no single person, and no single intervention can break the cycle of domestic abuse and trauma alone. It requires a Harambee philosophy – an integrated, all pull together approach.
We do this by:
• Supporting both parents, recognising that healing must happen individually and relationally.
• Creating safe, trauma informed spaces where parents feel understood rather than judged.
• Collaborating across services, ensuring families experience joined up support instead of fragmented systems.
• Keeping the baby at the centre, ensuring every decision reflects their right to safety, security and connection.
When we work in this way, families often describe feeling “held”, no longer navigating complex challenges alone. Harmony becomes something possible, not abstract.
Uniting a Divided Society, One Family at a Time
While society may feel increasingly polarised, the work at The For Baby’s Sake Trust is a reminder that unity begins at the most intimate level: within families, between parents, and around the needs of a child.
Every time a parent breaks a harmful cycle…
Every time a mother or father learns to regulate overwhelming emotions…
Every time a baby experiences attuned caregiving instead of fear…
…we are stitching threads of harmony back into the fabric of society.
This is how long term change happens – quietly, consistently, and compassionately. Therapeutic Practitioners, Social Workers and other colleagues are the steady hands guiding this process.
The Power of Being Seen and Heard
One of the most transformative parts of For Baby’s Sake is the way it enables parents to feel truly seen – perhaps for the first time. When someone understands their pain, their pattern, and their potential, shame loosens its grip and new pathways open.
This is not simply therapeutic work; it is healing. It challenges stigma, repairs trust and restores agency. It says to parents:
“You matter. Your baby matters. Your future can be different.”
That message – delivered through skilled, empathetic relational work, has the power to reshape entire family systems.
Celebrating the People Behind the Practice
As we recognise Social Work Month, we celebrate the practitioners who embody hope and harmony every day:
• those who show warmth even on the hardest days,
• those who advocate fiercely for babies’ safety and wellbeing,
• those who listen deeply and guide gently,
• those who help families imagine better futures and then walk alongside them to get there.
Your work is Harambee in action.
A Call to Keep Pulling Together
This Social Work Month, let’s recommit to the spirit of Harambee. Let’s continue to co build hope and harmony by:
• working collaboratively across services,
• centering on the voices and experiences of parents and babies,
• honoring each other’s strengths,
• challenging societal division with compassion and connection,
• and believing—always—that change is possible.
At For Baby’s Sake, every family we work with is a reminder that unity is built one relationship at a time. And when we pull together, the possibilities for babies, parents, and communities are extraordinary.
